Tour de Force is by perennial leading sire Tiznow out of multiple Grade 1 winner Dream Supreme, by Seeking the Gold. At least 10 sons of Tiznow have sired stakes winners, including four Grade 1 sires.
Tiznow’s dam is a granddaughter of Seattle Slew and about 25% of his stakes winners are out of mares that return this influence. With the Tiznow sons the percentage increases to 41% of the stakes winners they have collectively sired.
Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer A. P. Indy is the most prominent Seattle Slew offshoot and his influence is found in the pedigrees of at least 20 stakes winners by Tiznow and his sons.
The A. P. Indy sons Pulpit, Malibu Moon and Stephen Got Even are each the damsire of two blacktype winners by sons of Tiznow. Bernardini (G1 winner Hunter O’Riley), Friends Lake, Mineshaft and Aptitude are also the broodmare sires of stakes winners by Tiznow sons as are the Pulpit sons Tapit and Purge.
There are some other sources of Seattle Slew that have performed well with the Tiznow sons so far including Capote, Vindication, Stormy Atlantic (dam by Seattle Slew), Lemon Drop Kid (dam by Seattle Slew) and Cape Canaveral (dam by Seattle Slew).
The Alberta-based sire Cape Canaveral is certainly interesting for Tour de Force.T here is one starter each by Tiznow and a son (Morning Line) out of mares by Cape Canaveral. Both are winners and the one by Morning Line is the stakes winner Seven Trumpets.
Grade 1 winner Yellow Agate and the Colonel John SP runner Mending Fences are among the 11 starters by Tiznow sons of out mares by Lemon Drop Kid (by Kingmambo; there is an additional blacktye winner by the Tiznow son Tizway out of a Kingmambo daughter as well).
Tiznow sons have sired 4 blacktype winners from 28 starters (14%) out of daughters of Stormy Atlantic (by Storm Cat).
Tiznow sons have sired 3 blacktype winners from 24 starters (12%) out of daughters of the Seattle Slew son Vindication.
Sons of Tiznow have combined to sire 3 SWs from 34 starters out of mares by Dixie Union (9%, Tiznow is 1 for 13 on this specific cross). Dixie Union’s damsire is Capote, another champion son of Seattle Slew, and he’s also the damsire of the stallions Latent Heat, Najran, Line of David, Concord Point (by Tapit, 2nd dam by Relaunch).
The Dixie Union sons include Unification in Alberta, Overanalyze, Union Rags, High Cotton (out of an A. P. Indy mare so a Slew double), Grasshopper and Gone Astray. Dixie Union is also the damsire of New Year’s Day.
Mares by the Raja Baba grandson Yes It’s True (by Is It True) are worth consideration for Tour de Force.
Stakes winner Rowdy Yates is among the 14 starters by Tiznow sons out of daughters of Yes It’s True. A small sample size to be sure, but zooming out a little more we find that the broader Tiznow/Raja Baba cross has produced Dubai World Cup (G1) Well Armed (by Tiznow out of a mare by the Raja Baba grandson Notebook) along with 4 additional blacktype-placed horses by Tiznow (1) and his sons (3).
Overall, when Tiznow and sons are bred to Raja Baba-line mares they have sired 15% blacktype horses. Yes It’s True is also the 2nd damsire of the Colonel John G3 winner Cocked and Loaded. Another potential source of Yes It’s True are mares by his son Aikenite.
Mr. Prospector is perhaps the most ubiquitous influence in modern thoroughbred pedigrees so it’s not surprising to find that 57% of the stakes winners by the Tiznow sons are out of mares that show Mr. Prospector somewhere in their 5-generation pedigree.
The Gone West and Fappiano branches of the Mr. Prospector tree have performed best with the Tiznow sire-line so far.
Tiznow and his sons have sired a respectable 6% blacktype winners with all Gone West-line mares. That strike rate jumps to 11% with mares by the Gone West son Grand Slam and to 9% with mares by another Gone West stallion Elusive Quality.
Elusive Quality has a leading son in Quality Road and mares by the Alberta-based Elusive Quality stallion Omega Code could be nice substitute targets.
Within the Fappiano offshoot Cryptoclearance and Unbridled’s Song look most promising.
Tiznow and sons have sired 14% blacktype winners with Cryptoclearance-line mares so far. Two of those stakes winners are out of mares by the top Cryptoclearance grandson Candy Ride, including G1 winner Sporting Chance. The third is by the Cryptoclearance son Victory Gallop.
Mares by the successful Candy Ride stallion Twirling Candy also qualify based on this research.
Tiznow and sons with Unbridled’s Song daughters & granddaughters are hitting at a solid 7% rate.
As with Seattle Slew, reinforcing In Reality and Relaunch has seemingly been a positive for Tiznow and his sons. Around 22% of the stakes winners sired by the Tiznow sons are out of mares returning In Reality in some form and nearly half of those return Tiznow’s grandsire Relaunch.
Unbridled’s Song carries In Reality further back in his pedigree (sire of Unbridled’s 2nd dam).
Ghostzapper has been a terrific broodmare sire and is out of a Relaunch daughter. Point Given (2nd dam by Relaunch) is the damsire of a SW by the Tiznow son Tizway.
Like Tiznow, Officer is a Relaunch grandson out of a Seattle Slew granddaughter. This direct cross has worked surprisingly well with a pair of Graded stakes winners by Tiznow sons out of Officer daughters - G1 winner Lady Ivanka and G3 winner Theory. Those two from 18 total starters, 11% blacktype winners (and there is an additional blacktype-placed runner on this cross by the Tiznow son Colonel John).
Mares by First Dude are interesting as he’s by the A. P. Indy son Stephen Got Even (see above) with a 2nd dam by Relaunch. Additional sources of Relaunch include In Summation, Put It Back and Honour and Glory.
The aforementioned Twirling Candy is out of a mare by Chester House, whose 2nd dam by In Reality. We find Chester House (by Mr. Prospector) as the damsire of G1 winner La Coronel (by Colonel John) and mares showing this influence independent of Twirling Candy can also be considered.
Ghostzapper is a product of the highly successful Awesome Again/Relaunch cross that includes 4 stakes winners and 2 Grade 1 winners out of full sisters to Tiznow. The reverse of this cross has also shown success with Tiznow the sire of a pair of stakes winners out of daughters of Awesome Again (by Deputy Minister).
Tiznow and sons when bred to all Deputy Minister-line mares have sired a very solid 7% blacktype winners so far.
Mares by the Canadian-based Awesome Again sons On Board Again and Wilko are certainly interesting for Tour de Force. Dehere, Silver Deputy, French Deputy, Open Forum, Salt Lake and Touch Gold are among the other Deputy Minister sons whose daughters have produced stakes winners by Tiznow and/or one of his sons.
There is some evidence that the Tiznow sons have an affinity for the Caro influence. Caro is most likely found in modern pedigrees as the damsire of Unbridled’s Song and, further back, as the great, great grandsire of Uncle Mo.
The 2nd dam of Grade 1 winner Airoforce, by Colonel John, is by the Caro son With Approval.
From 25 total starters out of daughters and granddaughters of the Caro son Cozzene, Tiznow sons have sired a pair of group/graded stakes winners (8%). One of them, the Chilean multiple Group 1 winner La Buena Vida is by the Cozzene son Mizzen Mast, puting mares by his former Canadian-based son Mast Track in play for Tour de Force.
